ECI urges neutral Sweden and Switzerland to give Israel a fair chance
Stockholm/Bern 5th June, 2013 – ECI has quietly stepped up its efforts in two of Europe´s most influential neutral countries, Sweden and Switzerland, by meeting with government and parliament representatives. The move is part of a wider strategy to reach out beyond the decision makers in Brussels, directly to members of parliaments and governments in the EU member states and – as in the case of Switzerland – countries outside of the EU.
Last week a newly formed Swiss ECI team met in Geneva in connection with the opening week of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to protest the singling out of Israel at the UN human rights body.
- By singling out Israel the UN fails to honour its commitments to address human rights violations in countries where people are suffering under repressive regimes, Tomas Sandell said in a statement.
- Instead of addressing the human rights violations the UN promotes the perpetrators by electing them to the Human Rights Council, he said.
