President of Czech senate condems Holocaust denial at Remembrance Day event in Prague

sobotka_ruzickova Prague 17 April 2007 – The president of the Czech senate, Dr Premysl Sobotka, took a firm stand against Holocaust denial when he spook at the Holocaust Remembrance Day event in the garden of the Czech senate in the old town of Prague on Sunday. In his speech Dr Sobotka quoted a recent resolution from the Czech parliament which calls for all democracies to join forces in condemning the Holocaust denial conference in Iran which was called together to “study the historical validity of the Holocaust”.“-We can never bow down to hatred but need to speak up when anti-Semitism once more is threatening our societies”, he said.The Czech parliament was the first to publicly file a protest against the event but was shortly joined by other parliaments in Europe.

European Coalition for Israel met with upcoming Portuguese EU-presidency

- Portugal to nominate EU-envoy to the Middle East

portugalLisbon 2 March 2007 – The Portuguese EU-presidency, which beginns on July 1, will nominate an EU-ambassador to the Middle East in an attempt to revive the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.

- " This move is part of a plan to give more attention to troubled areas in the world", says Isabel Pedrosa from the Portuguese Foreign Ministry in Lisbon. On Wednesday a small delegation from the ECI met with Pedrosa to raise issues of concern for Israel during the upcoming six month Portuguese EU-presidency.

ECI Holocaust Remembrance Day event in Brussels

European Commissioner Jan Figel calls for educational efforts to prevent history from repeating itself

Jan Figel Brussels 31 january 2007 – European Commissioner for education Jan Figel stressed the importance of education when it comes to fighting anti-Semitism and intolerance inEurope of today.

- “Holocaust is not only a tragedy of the past but something which we must be reminded of again and again in order not to repeat the mistakes of the past”, he said. Figel spoke at the main event of the “Learn from history” campaign which involved hundreds of churches across Europe in commemorating the victims of the Holocaust on Sunday 28 January. The campaign culminated with the European Holocaust Remembrance event on Monday night in Brussels.
