European Coalition for Israel to commemorate International Holocaust day

HolocaustBrussels – European Coalition for Israel will commemorate the International Holocaust Day at events in Brussels and Krakow. Executive director Rijk van Dam will be attending the official commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camps. He will take part in the official commemoration ceremony which includes speeches by Russian president Vladimir Putin, Polish president Alexander Kwasnievski and Israeli president Moshe Katsav. Mr Van Dam is part of a limited group of international dignitaries and activists who are personally invited to attend the event.

Earlier in the winter Mr Van Dam visited Poland where he met with members of parliament and representatives from the Polish government to discuss the need for better relations between EU and Israel.

In Brussels the Coalition will be screening the documentary film "Lest we forget".

This documentary, produced by Johannes Facius and Christopher McDermott, has arisen from a deep concern over the rise of anti-Semitism in recent years. In particular we are seeing an increasing fervor by those who seek to either deny or minimize the reality of the Holocaust perpetrated by the Nazis. The purpose of the documentary is to reaffirm the horrors of the Holocaust and alert our audience to the fact that history is set to repeat unless action is taken.

The screening, which is co-hosted by Finnish MEP Hannu Takkula and the European Coalition for Israel, will be attended by the Israeli ambassador to the European Union, Oded Eran, the Chairman of the European Parliament delegation to Israel, MEP Jana Hybaskova and many other members of European parliament. The International Holocaus day will be commemorated by the partner organisations in several other locations in Europe.

The European Coalition for Israel was launched in March 2004 in order to promote closer relations and understanding between Israel and the European Union, to confront anti-Semitism in Europe and to educate about its long and tragic history. In August former member of European parliament, Rijk van Dam, was appointed executive director for the coalition, a post he took up in October.

The European Coaliton for Israel is a joint initiative of the four leading international Christian pro-Israel ministries ( Bridges for Peace, Christians for Israel, Christian Friends of Israel and International Christian Embassy Jerusalem ) It is supported by a growing number of national organisations, local churches and private individuals in Europe.
