European Coalition for Israel welcomes UN ceasefire resolution

European Coalition for Israel welcomes UN ceasefire resolution but warns: “Only full disarmament of Hizb’allah can secure peace and stability in Lebanon”

Support Israel Flag projectBarneveld, Netherlands, 15 August, 2006 – The European Coalition for Israel welcomed on Monday the UN ceasefire resolution in Lebanon and stressed that it is now up to the world community and the Lebanese government to disarm Hizb’allah and fully prevent the terrorist organisation from firing new rockets in to northern Israel.

- “If the original UN resolution 1559, where the world community had called for all militias in Lebanon to disarm, had been implemented as agreed in 2004 the war could have been avoided alltogether”, stated ECI executive director Rijk van Dam from his office in the Netherlands.

- “Now it is up to the United Nations to prove to the world that they are willing and able to live up to its obligations to secure peace and stability at the Israeli-Lebanese border”, he said in a short statement from Barneveld.

According to the UN ceasefire plan which was agreed on Saturday, the United Nations will deploy a multinational force of uptill 15.000 troops in southern Lebanon alongside a Lebanese government force of similar size.

The new UN Security Council resolution 1701 calls for “the full implementation of the relevant provisions of the Taif Accords, and of resolutions 1559 (2004) and 1680 (2006), that require the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon, so that, pursuant to the Lebanese cabinet decision of July 27, 2006, there will be no weapons or authority in Lebanon other than that of the Lebanese state.”

The five member organisations of the European Coalition for Israel* has throughout the war helped assist victims of the war by provining relief aid and alternative housing for children and women fleeing northern Israel. The campaign to help those who have suffered from the war continues and ECI encourages all its members and supporters to help the people who will soon try to return to a normal life and rebuild their homes. More information on how one can help those who have suffered from the war can be found on the websites of the five member organisations.
