Ban Ki-moon's visit to Tehran undermines public’s trust in the UN
Brussels, August 27th, 2012 – ‘The decision by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to attend the Annual Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran, hosted by Iranian leader Ahmadinejad, is a serious blow to the integrity and trust in the United Nations’, said Tomas Sandell. This statement on Tuesday, comes just two days before the official part of the Summit is scheduled to begin. The Non-Aligned Movement brings together more than 120 nations and today has the largest voting bloc in the UN General Assembly.
‘Iran has violated some of the most fundamental principles of the UN charter by threatening to wipe another UN member state off the map and by actively sponsoring terrorism around the world. But Iran is not only a threat to world peace, but just as much to its own citizens, who are being heavily suppressed by the current regime. By attending the conference, the highest official of the UN is in fact helping to legitimise the policies of the Iranian regime, instead of supporting its citizens and standing up for the core values of the UN charter’, the statement read.
